Oct 24: Lamb Shoulder Chops Rogan Josh

Lunch

We cooked a Specially Selected – Eggplant & Grana Padano Cheese flatbread fro Aldi for $4.19, or $2.10 per serve.

Dinner

It’s amazing what simple ingredients, plus time can give. We took two Lamb Shoulder Chop, which is a cut we to a long braise, and braise them in a Kashmiri Simmer Sauce to make Rogan Josh.

  • The Lamb Should Chops were a generous serve for an average of $5.31 per serve
  • The Kashmiri Simmer Sauce was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Add 34c for Brown Rice
  • Add 36c for Rice and Peas
  • Stewed Eggplant was $1.00 per serve.

The Simmer Sauce picked up a lot of unctuousness from the Lamb to make a very tasty Curry for $8.01 per serve. The Stewed Egg0plant was a huge disappointment as it was mostly flavorless. Neither Foodie had more than half.

Oct 23: Frogmore Stew

Lunch

For lunch we finished our Soyrizo Nachos.

  • Soy Chorizo is $2.29 or 58c per serve
  • Refried Beans are 99c or 50c per serve
  • The Corn Chips were $1.99 and we used about ⅓, or 33c per serve
  • Baby Bell Peppers add 32c per serve
  • Add 10c for Plain Yoghurt
  • Add 40c for Guacamole
  • Add 30c for Salsa.

An overly generous meal for $2.53 per serve.

Dinner

For dinner we reheated the remaining Frogmore Stew and cooked Shrimp before serving, for $6.13 per serve.

Oct 22: Caramelized Pork Salad

Lunch

We have a plethora of left-overs so we reheated some rustic Panini Rolls and filled them with some of the remaining Soutzoukakia.

  • The Soutzoukakia is $3.23 per full serve, or 81c per lunch serve
  • The Panini Roll is 63c
  • Add 10c for Lettuce.

A very enjoyable sandwich for $1.54 per serve.

Dinner

Speaking of left-overs, we reheated the Caramelized Pork and topped a Salad with it.

  • The Caramelized Pork is $2.30 per serve
  • Lettuce adds 35c per serve
  • Baby Bell Peppers add 64c per serve
  • Dressing ingredients add 40c per serve
  • Mint came from our garden.

A very good variation for the Caramelized Pork that worked well, for $3.69 per serve.

Oct 21: Ahi Tuna Tataki with Bento Box

Lunch

We enjoyed some toasted Italian Bread topped with Delice de Bougogne and Sliced Apple.

  • The Delice de Bourgogne was $5.38 and we shared ½, or $1.35 per serve
  • The Italian Bread was 32c per serve
  • Apple adds 20c per serve.

A very tasty lunch for $1.87 per serve.

Dinner

It was Bento Box week again, with Ahi Tuna Tataki.

The Bento Box was $18.38 per serve with tax and tip, while 12 oz of Tuna was $5.19, or $2.60 per serve, or $20.98 per serve.

Oct 20: Cubano and Jerk Plantain Chips

Lunch

For lunch we shared an Imagine Tetra Pack of Creamy Portobello Soup for $1.71 per serve, which we thought was very good. It had an excellent creamy mouth-feel for having no dairy.

Dinner

Since we had remaining Cuban Style Roast Pork, it was only natural we’d be making Cubanos a few days later.

  • The Cuban Roast Pork is $2.26 per serve
  • Ham is 92c per serve
  • Swiss is 41c per serve
  • Bread and Butter Pickles are $4.69 for the jar, but we used less than 10%, or 23c per serve
  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c per serve
  • Plantain Chips were $1.70 and we used half, or 43c per serve.

As aways, a very tasty meal for $4.83 per serve.

Oct 19: Frogmore Stew

Lunch

There’s nothing simple about a Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato Sandwich because when it’s done right, it’s sublime.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • Uncured Bacon was $5.99 for 10 slices, and we shared three, or 75c per serve
  • Butter Lettuce adds 25c per serve
  • Semi-dried Tomatoes add 40c per serve.

Perhaps not sublime, but very tasty for $2.14 per serve.

Dinner

After more than a year without it, we returned to a Winter favorite: Frogmore Stew. Think southern boil with shrimp, corn, etc, but where the stewing liquid is turned into a sauce by adding Butter.

  • Leaks cost $1.08 and we used half, or 14c per serve
  • The can of diced tomatoes cost 99c or 25c per serve
  • Vegetarian Fish Stock was $2.51 or 63c per serve
  • A cup of white wine is about 80c or 20c per serve
  • The corn cost $2.25 or 56c per serve
  • Andouille sausage cost $4.99 or $1.25 per serve
  • 1 lb of shrimp is $10.99,  or $2.75 per serve
  • Other ingredients add another 25c per serve
  • We served with the remaining Italian Bread for 10c per serve.

For a simple boil, this has great depth of flavor, mostly thanks to the Old Bay, for $6.13 per serve.

Oct 18: Tex-Mex Soyrizo and Bean Nachos with Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa and Baby Bell Peppers

As it was a gray day, the Aldi Potato Soup for $1.00 per serve was a perfect fit.

Oct 17: Cuban Style Roast Pork with Black Beans and Brown Rice

For lunch we defrosted and heated the remaining Turkey, Bacon, Chipotle Meatloaf in a Par baked roll.

  • The Sandwich Rolls are 89c per serve
  • The Meatloaf is $2.53 per full serve, or $1.27 per lunch serve
  • The Coleslaw Mix was $1.99 and we used 1/4, or 25c per serve
  • We made our own Dressing from Mayonnaise, and Chipotle Hot Sauce for 30c per serve.

A decent lunch for $2.71 per serve.

Dinner

A welcome return to Cuban-Style Roast Pork with Mojo Sauce, tonight with a Black Bean Salad and Brown Rice. We will get four serves from the Pork, and two from the Sauce and Salad.

  • The Pork Butt was around $9.88 after all discounts, or $2.47 per serve
  • Limes were 56c or 14c per serve
  • Grapefruit was $1.39 or 35c per serve
  • Navel Oranges were $1.19 or 30c per serve
  • Cuban Black Beans were $1.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Add 34c for Brown Rice.

The Pork becomes very tender and flavorsome with the Marinade. An great meal for $3.60 per serve.

Oct 16: Caramelized Pork Bowl with Coleslaw

Having had more than three weeks between Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwiches from Skewers, we enjoyed them again with a side of fries, for $8.75 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight’s Vietnamese Style Caramelized Pork Bowl was served with a Vietnamese inspired Coleslaw.

  • The ground pork was $5.99 and we’ll get four serves from that, or $1.50 per serve
  • Add 40c for ginger, shallot, garlic and chili, etc
  • The Coleslaw Mix is 30c per serve,
  • Dressing ingredients add 40c per serve
  • Mint came from our garden.

A tasty meal for $2.60 per serve.

Oct 15: Striped Bass with Southwest Salad

For lunch we had an open faced grilled Ham, Gouda and Tomato.

  • The Sourdough was $2.85 or 19c per slice
  • Sliced Gouda is 36c per serve
  • The Deli Ham adds 66c per serve
  • Semi-dried Tomatoes add 30c per serve
  • Add 30c for Garlic Spread.

A decent lunch for $1.81 per serve.

Tonight’s Fishy Friday is a return to the Striped Bass, but tonight with a Southwest Salad Kit from Aldi.
