We enjoyed a Rissole and Chipotle Cheddar in a hot Ciabatta Roll.

  • The Ciabatta Roll is 58c per serve
  • The Chipotle Cheddar is 36c per serve
  • Add 20c for Carolina BBQ Sauce
  • A Rissole adds 91c per serve.

A tasty Roll for $1.95 per serve.

Dinner

Being Fishy Friday we enjoyed Pan Fried Steelhead Trout, with Waffle Fries and Vinegar Coleslaw.

  • The Trout was $8.57, or $4.29 per serve.
  • Add 45c for Coleslaw
  • The Waffle Fries were $1.49, and we shared half or 38c per serve
  • Add 30c for Balsamic vinegar and seasoning.

A tasty meal for $5.42 per serve.

Jul 28: Tagliata

Lunch

Lunch was a delightful Speck and Arugula Ciabatta.

  • The Ciabatta is 58c per serve
  • The Speck was $3.99, or $2.00 per serve
  • Arugula adds 40c per serve
  • The Duke’s Mayonnaise adds 25c per serve.

A very tasty sandwich for $3.18 per serve. There was enough residual heat from finishing the Ciabatta to soften the Speck.

Dinner

Our traditional Steak Night went Italian again with Tagliata – Italian Sliced Steak.

  • The Top Sirloin (a.k.a. Rump) Steak was $8.01 or $4.01 per 8oz serve
  • Baby Arugula is $2.49 and we used about half, or 62c per serve
  • Add 80c for Shaved Parmesan
  • Add 50c for Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oil.

The Steak was quite tender and full of flavor, to the point some would find it a little too “gamy,” but we appreciated the added flavor. A pretty good meal and the equal of any Tagliata we had in Italy, for $5.93 per serve.

Jul 27: Beef Rissoles with Australian Style Salad

Lunch

Today we experimented with an Egg Salad Sandwich with Arugula.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • A Pastured Egg is 50c per serve
  • Arugula adds 20c per serve
  • Add 35c for Mayonnaise
  • Add 30c for Celery.

A pretty decent sandwich for $2.04 per serve.

Dinner

A return to Beef Rissoles with our Australian inspired Salad.

  • Ground beef $5.99 or $2.00 per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve
  • A Pastured Egg is 38c or 13c per serve
  • The onion is 8c per serve
  • Pickled beets in vinaigrette are $1.69, of which we used about ⅓ or 28c per serve
  • We used about ½ of the $3.95 Sharp Cheddar, or 66c per serve
  • Add 40c for Carolina BBQ Sauce.

For us, this is nostalgia on a plate for $4.06 per serve.

Jul 26: Folded Eggs on Avocado Toast topped with Chili Onion Crisp

Lunch

For lunch we had Shin Ramen with Cabbage for $1.67 per serve.

Dinner

Another quick and easy meal: Folded Eggs on Avocado Toast topped with Chili Onion Crisp.

  • The Pastured Eggs are 50c per serve
  • The Italian Bread was 38c per serve
  • A satchel of Guacamole adds 76 per serve
  • Add 30c for the Chili Onion Crisp.

It remains true that the Chili Onion Crisp is the real star of this dish, which is pretty good for $1.94 per serve.

Jul 25: Smoked Pork Belly “Cobb” Salad

Lunch

A simple Ham and Coleslaw sandwich was lunch today.

  • Dave’s Killer Rye Bread is 76c per serve
  • The Breakfast Ham is $2.99 for six, or 50c per serve
  • Coleslaw adds $1.25 per serve.

Not too shabby for $2.51 per serve.

Dinner

In an ever evolving series of variations on a Cobb Salad, we focused this one on Smoked Pork Belly. The cooked Pork Belly comes from Trader Joe’s. We sliced and smoked it on the stove-top smoker before serving on top of the other salad items.

  • The Pork Belly is $6.49 or $3.25 per serve
  • A Pastured Egg is 50c per serve
  • An Avocado is $1.29 and we shared one, or 65c per serve
  • The Grape tomatoes cost $2.99 and we used about half, or 75c per serve
  • Lettuce leaves adds 45c per serve
  • Add 30c for Balsamic Glaze.

Cutting the Pork before smoking exposed more surface to the smoke, and we picked up good smoke flavor. I very good variation on a Cobb Salad for $6.90 per serve.

Jul 24: Warm Shredded Lamb on Hummus with Pita and a Lettuce, Cucumber, Pistachio and Preserved Lemon Salad

Lunch

Our lunch was a Panini version of the Chirzo, Bell Pepper and Cheese sandwich.

  • The Ciabatta Roll is 58c per serve
  • The Chipotle Cheddar is 36c per serve
  • The Chorizo was $4.72 and we used half, or $1.18 per serve
  • Fire Roasted Peppers cost $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve.

We preferred the Panini version of what is a very good sandwich for $2.62 per serve.

Dinner

It was time to prepare Shredded Lamb in bulk for tonight and three additional meals. Tonight’s was served on Hummus with a Lettuce, Cucumber, Pistachio and Preserved Lemon Salad. Our Mint was in no condition to be picked thanks to the ongoing heat.

  • The Lamb was $21.01 or $2.10 per serve
  • Add 25c per serve for red wine
  • Add 30c for Onion and seasoning
  • The Lettuce was $1.49 and we used half, or 38c each

  • Add 46c for Hummus.

Always a very tasty meal for $4.52 per serve.

Lunch

Foodie Greg was unwell so Foodie Philip had a Ham, Chipotle Cheddar and Semi-dried Tomato toasted sandwich.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Chipotle Cheddar adds 72c per serve
  • Breakfast Ham is 59c per serve
  • Add 30c for Cherry Tomatoes
  • Add 45c for Garlic Spread.

A decent toasted sandwich for $2.80.

Dinner

A last minute change in plans had us swapping Meatless Monday to tonight and having a frozen Thai Green Curry from Trader Joe’s for $4.49 per serve.

Jul 22: Sous Vidé Duck Breast with Garlic Bok Choy and Black Rice

Lunch

Because we were in Simi Valley for a fourth Covid vaccine booster, we bough our “Taste of Tassie,” a.k.a. Fried Scallops with Fries and Coleslaw from Mr Fish and Chips for $7.84 per serve with tax and tip, which is still very good value.

Dinner

For tonight’s sous vidé and seared Duck Breast we kept everything pretty straight because we were trying a Sparkling Shiraz as a food pairing.

  • The Duck Breasts were $12.06 or $6.03 per serve
  • Black Rice adds 34c per serve
  • Bok Choy adds another 48c per serve.

The Duck was excellent, as usual, for $6.88 per serve and the wine is definitely worth repeating.

Jul 21: Bento Box with Ahi Tuna Tataki

Lunch

A return to our toasted Chorizo, Bell Pepper and Chipotle Cheddar.

  • The Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Chipotle Cheddar is 36c per serve
  • The Chorizo was $4.72 and we used half, or $1.18 per serve
  • Fire Roasted Peppers cost $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve.

A pretty good sandwich for $2.78 per serve.

Dinner

It was time for our Bento Box and Ahi Tuna Tataki (Seared).

  • The Bento Box was $21.00 per serve with tax and tip.
  • The Tuna came from Amazon where 12oz is $10.29, and we shared one steak or $2.58 per serve.

The Tuna from Amazon comes packaged as two six ounce serves, which reduces the amount per serve to a more reasonable 3 oz per serve. We thought it was a higher grade Tuna than we had been getting. Always a great meal for $23.58.

Jul 20: Smoked Salmon, Pea and Cream Cheese Frittata

Lunch

For lunch we had Shin Ramen with Cabbage for $1.67 per serve.

Dinner

We still had a little Smoked Salmon, so to better flavor the Frittata Foodie Greg sautéed it in Butter before adding the Peas and Eggs.

  • The little bit of Smoked Salmon has already been included
  • Pastured Eggs add 96c per serve
  • Green Peas add 45c per serve
  • Add 60c for Capers, Arugula and Butter.

A pretty decent Frittata for $2.01 per serve.
