  • Andouille sausage cost $4.99 and we used half, or $1.25 per serve

While we should have used more of the Lemon Spice Mix, it was tasty, with the Andouille the star of the dish. A good meal for $5.29 per serve.

Jun 4: Lamb Keema on a Jacket Potato

Lunch

Today’s lunch was Shin Ramen with Cabbage for $1.67 per serve.

Dinner

Foodie Greg wanted to experiment with a traditional Indian Lamb Keema, but we couldn’t decide between Rice and Noodles, so we decided to cook a Jacket Potato and load it with the Lamb Keema. We made a lot of Lamb Keema!

  • The Russet Potatoes were $1.33 or 67c per serve
  • The Lamb was $5.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Add 15c per serve for Onion, Garlic and Ginger
  • Add 20c per serve for Seasoning
  • Add 17c per serve for Tomato Puree
  • Add 17c per serve for Chopped Tomatoes
  • Add 10c for Frozen Green Peas per serve.

The Lamb Keema had a great depth of spice without being too hot. We upped the heat a little with some Sriracha that wasn’t strictly in the recipe. A pretty good meal for $2.46 per serve.

Jun 3: Steelhead Trout with a Malt Vinegar Coleslaw and Waffle Fries

  • Add 45c for Coleslaw
  • The Waffle Fries were $1.49, and we shared half or 38c per serve

The Trout was tasty and the Coleslaw a good balance and now that we have the cook time on the Waffle Fries correct, it’s a good meal for $6.58 per serve.

May 2022: Summary and Observations

The first third of May was most atypical as we were vacationing in Italy. Some of our meals were included in the vacation, some where not, so it was easiest to leave them out of the calculations. We didn’t splurge to the level of a Michelin Star, but we ate some very good food in some very nice restaurants. Our typical evening meal out on the trip that we paid for separately averaged around $55.00.

The averages for this month were all over the place, but within our range of “normal”. We did have more lunch take-out than typical.

  • Lunch prepared at home $2.36 ($2.07 in April 22)
  • Lunch eaten or purchased outside the home: $12.11 ($9.43)
  • Dinner eaten at home: $4.97 ($5.43)
  • Dinner prepared in a restaurant $16.61 ($20.99)

The variation is usually small month to month and May was within our normal range.

Our most expensive meal of the month (again) was The Country Deli for $16.68 per serve, because we returned to sharing a single Entree.

This month, lunches at home cost 20% of the cost of eating lunches prepared outside the home. Our evening meals prepared in the home are 30% of the cost of take-out meals.

Had we purchased every lunch and prepared none it would have cost us $242.20 per person in May. We actually spent $42.45 for lunches at home plus $36.33 for lunches purchased or eaten out:  $78.78 per person in total.

If every evening meal cost us the same as our average this month, the total for evening meals would be $332.20. We actually spent $94.35 for dinners at home and $33.22 for our two dinners from a restaurant, or $127.57 per person in total, excluding the Italy trip.

We saved about $367 per person by preparing almost all our meals at home and we have a lot more control over what we eat.

May 31: Turkey, Bacon, Chipotle Meatloaf with Chipotle Coleslaw

We enjoyed our Chorizo, Bell Pepper and Gouda Toasted Sandwich.

  • The Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • Gouda is 34c per serve
  • The Chorizo was $4.72 and we used half, or $1.18 per serve
  • Fire Roasted Peppers cost $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve.

A great sandwich for $2.76 per serve.

Dinner

Time to finish the other half of the Turkey, Bacon, Chipotle Meatloaf, served with Chipotle Coleslaw.

  • The Meatloaf is $3.13 per serve
  • Add 65c for Coleslaw and Dressing.

A very satisfying meal for $3.78 per serve.
