May 20: Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw; NY Strip Steak, Béarnaise Sauce and Tabouleh

Lunch

During our weekly shopping trip to Aldi, the Foodies picked up Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw from Mr Fish & Chips for $5.19 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

A simple meal of NY Strip Steak, Béarnaise Sauce and Tabouleh.

  • Two Strip Steaks in a single pack were $16.29, and shared one for $4.07 per serve
  • The Tabouli is $2.99 and we served half, or 36c per serve
  • The Béarnaise sauce was $3.29 and we used about ⅓, or 55c per serve.

Simple ingredients can still be very tasty, for $4.98 per serve.

May 19: Lamb Gyro; Portobello Mushrooms Stuffed with Beef Ragu and Ricotta

Lunch

A trip to Home Depot had us near New York Chicken and Gyro, so naturally we picked up a Lamb Gyros for $8.17 with tax and tip.

Dinner

In an attempt to redeem the overly-sweet Beef Ragu we had in the freezer, we stuffed it in a grilled Portobello Mushroom and topped with a Ricotta and Blue Cheese Crumble Béchamel that went under the grill. We served two Mushrooms each.

  • The Ragu was $3.49 per serve
  • Four Portobello Mushrooms were $3.49 or 88c per serve
  • The Ricotta was $4.99 or $65c per serve
  • Blue Cheese Crumbles add 44c per serve.

The Portobello Mushroom and Ricotta/Blue Cheese mix, combined with a generous dosing with Worcestershire Sauce, bought the sweetness under control, making a quite good meal for $5.46 per serve.

May 18: Deli Ham, Caramelized Onion Hummus & Tabouleh on a Brioche Bagel; Rissoles with Australian Inspired Salad

Lunch

An inspired idea from Foodie Greg: add Ham, Caramelized Onion Hummus and Tabouleh on a toasted Brioche Bun.

  • The Brioche Bun is 58c
  • The Deli Ham adds 66c per serve
  • The Tabouli is $2.99 and we served half, or 36c per serve.
  • Caramelized Onion Hummus adds 73c per serve.

This turned out really well for $2.33 per serve, creating a flavor combination that surpassed the ingredients.

Dinner

It was time to finish the last of the Rissoles we cooked, so we reheated the remaining and served them with an Australian-inspired Salad.

  • Dry aged ground beef $8.57 or $2.86 per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve
  • A Pastured Egg is 42c or 14c per serve
  • The onion is 4c per serve
  • Spinach was $1.49 or 38c per serve
  • Pickled beets in vinaigrette are $1.69, of which we used about ⅓ or 28c per serve
  • We used about ½ of the $5.75 Caramelized Onion Cheddar, or $1.44 per serve
  • Add 10c for Carolina BBQ sauce.

A very satisfying meal for $5.74 per serve.

May 17: Rissole & Smokey Cheddar Sandwich; Coconut Curry Mussels with Paratha

Lunch

The Foodies were in different places at lunch today, and Foodie Philip had a very late lunch of a Rissole Sandwich with Smokey Cheddar.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Rissole is $1.26 for a half serve
  • Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

A decent, quick sandwich for $2.74, although it would have been better if the Rissole was warmed.

Dinner

A return to our favorite Mussel recipe: Coconut Curry Mussels. We served with a hot Paratha.

  • The pre-cooked Mussels were $2.29 or $1.15 per serve
  • Coconut Milk was $1.89 or 95c per serve
  • We used three baby Bell Pepper for 16c each, or 24c per serve
  • Ginger was 24c, or 12c per serve
  • Add 75c per serve for the other ingredients
  • The Paratha was $1.99 for five, or 40c per serve.

We’ve tried other Mussel recipes, but this one is our favorite for $3.61 per serve.

May 16: Ham Scrambled Eggs on Toast; 13 Bean Soup

Lunch

For Lunch we chopped some of the remaining Leg Ham, added some Scrambled Eggs, and poured it all over a slice of toast.

  • Leg Ham adds 10c per serve
  • Two Pastured Eggs add 64c per serve
  • A slice of Dave’s Killer Bread is 37c per serve.

A pretty good lunch for $1.11 per serve.

Dinner

A very gray day and cool evening had us change plans to 13 Bean Soup with a stock made from our recent Ham Bone. Not exactly vegetarian.

  • The Ham Bone was free so the Stock had no cost
  • Add 25c per serve for Bay Leaf, Carrot & Onion
  • The 13 Bean Mix was $5.49 and we used half, or 69c per serve.

The Soup is filling an very tasty for 94c per serve.

May 15: Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich; Smoked Baby Back Ribs with Coleslaw and Baked Beans

Lunch

The Foodies may be a little obsessed with Skewers’ Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, with Fries, from Skewers for $8.75 per serve.

Dinner

Although not on special, Baby Back Rib sare hard to pass, so we didn’t! Smoked, then finished in the oven, we served with a tangy Coleslaw and Baked Beans.

  • The Ribs were $16.28 without discounts, or $8.14 per serve
  • The Baked Beans are 99c per serve
  • The Coleslaw and Dressing add 45c per serve.

The Ribs were perfectly tender and just falling off the bone. A really good meal for $9.58 per serve.

May 14: Shin Noodles; Rainbow Trout in Crazy Water

Lunch

A gray old day made hot noodles an attractive proposition. We poured off the overly spicy broth, and finished with a pat of Butter.

  • A pack of four Shin Noodle Bowl was $3.69 or 93c per serve
  • Bok Choy adds 30c
  • Add 20c per serve for butter.

We both preferred the stir-fry style finish than the soupy broth that we mostly don’t consume. So a nice meal for $1.43 per serve.

Dinner

We had a new Fishy Friday meal tonight: Rainbow Trout in Crazy Water.

  • The Heirloom Tomatoes were $5.14 or $2.57 per serve
  • The Rainbow Trout was $9.37 for four pieces, or $2.34 per serve
  • Add 30c for other ingredients
  • Add 63c for the hot Panini Roll.

The Rainbow Trout, and the overall dish, was okay, but we won’t repeat this dish. We will return to the Rainbow Trout with another preparation. An okay meal for $5.84 per serve.

May 13: Delice de Bourgogne, Leg Ham & Onion Sprouts on a Brioche Bagel; Japanese Bento Box with Ahi Tuna Tataki

Lunch

Back in Australia we would regularly visit George’s Gourmet Kitchen and buy a Hame, Camembert and Snow Pea Shoots. Our reproduction is on a Brioche Bagel, substitutes Delice de Bourgogne for the Camembert and Onion Sprouts instead of Snow Pea Shoots.

  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c
  • Leg Ham adds 10c per serve
  • Sprouts add 30c per serve
  • The Delice de Bourgogne was $5.38 and we shared ½, or $1.35 per serve.

So very, very good for $2.33 per serve.

Dinner

Although our schedule would have this as a Country Deli Steak Dinner night, we changed up the schedule and had the Japanese Bento Box that we augmented at home with a generous serve of Ahi Tuna Tataki.

  • 12 oz Tuna was $5.19, or $2.60 per serve
  • The Bento Box was $18.33 with tax and tip.

The Bento Box is a good meal, but hacked with the addition of 6oz of Ahi Tuna Tataki makes it feel very luxurious for $20.93 per serve.

May 12: Smokey Tuna & Capers, Ham, Smokey Cheddar & Ketchup; Ham “Cobb” Salad

Lunch

As well as a Smokey Tuna, Capers & Shallot sandwich, we created a Deli Ham, Smokey Cheddar and Ketchup sandwich, riffing on Ham, Cheese & Tomato.

  • The Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • The Smokey Tuna is 50c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 33c per serve
  • Garlic Spread adds 40c per serve.

The Ham, Cheese & Ketchup triggered a culinary memory for the Foodies, of cheap Devon (processed meat), Cheddar Slices and Ketchup. It wasn’t terrible, but we won’t be repeating it! An okay lunch for $2.31 per serve.

Dinner

The Foodies made a last minute change to a Cobb-style Salad featuring Leg Ham as it’s primary protein.

  • We shared a serve of Ham for 10c per serve
  • Blue Cheese Crumbles add 44c per serve
  • Pastured Eggs are 38c per serve
  • Lettuce adds 35c per serve
  • Avocados were 49c or 25c per serve

This is a good variation on a Cobb Salad for $2.52 per serve.

May 11: Delice de Bourgogne, Leg Ham & Onion Sprouts on a Brioche Bagel; Eloté

An exceptionally tasty lunch for $2.33 per serve.

Dinner

Foodie Greg had planned something completely different for tonight’s dinner, but while shopping for Cotija (on special) he discovered some very fresh Corn at Whole Foods, so we changed plans and grilled the Corn and covered it with a Cotija mix and enjoyed.

  • The Cotija was $3.59 on special and we used about ⅓, or 60c per serve
  • The Corn was $2.25 or $1.13 per serve
  • Add 80c per serve for Mayo, Yoghurt and Chipotle sprinkle.

A super favorite of Foodie Philip, which did not disappoint, for $2.53 per serve.
