Mar 20: Italian Bread with Apple & Delice de Bourgogne; Red Wine and Mushroom Meatloaf with Sous Vide Asparagus

We cut four slices from a par-baked Italian Loaf & toasted them, then topped with Delice de Bourgogne and Apple.

  • The Italian Bread loaf is $2.19 and we used about ⅓, or 37c per serve
  • The Delice de Bourgogne was $5.38 and we shared ½, or $1.35 per serve
  • Apple adds 20c per serve.

An excellent open faced sandwich for $1.92 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight’s Red Wine and Mushroom Meatloaf was served with Sous Vide Asparagus.We get four serves from this recipe.

Tonight we made our our sauce by mixing Worcestershire Sauce with an Organic, no added sugar, Ketchup for a very tangy, tasty sauce.

  • The grass fed Ground Beef was from Aldi for $5.49 per pound, or $1.38 per serve
  • Baby Bella mushrooms were $1.99 or 50c per serve
  • Onions and garlic add 20c per serve
  • Two medium eggs are 64c or 16c per serve
  • The butter is $3.99 per block, and we used about 3/8 for four serves, or 38c per serve
  • Red wine adds $1.00 or 25c per serve
  • Add 20c for Worcestershire sauce and other spices per serve
  • The Asparagus was $3.23 and we used half, or 81c per serve
  • Add 38c for Butter for the Sous Vide
  • Add 20c for Sauce.

The Ground Beef from Aldi has a much finer texture than we had previously. It came together into an excellent meal for $4.46 per serve.

Mar 19: Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw; Smoked Salmon Pizza

Lunch

A rearranged schedule from our regular Thursday had both Foodies on the weekly shopping trip to Aldi, with a side pickup of Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw from Mr Fish & Chips for $5.19 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

The first ‘long’ day after swapping to Summer Time, and the temperature was warm enough, so we decided to grill our Smoked Salmon Pizza.

  • Sockeye Smoked Salmon was $5.49 or $2.75 per serve
  • The Pizza Dough was $1.29, or 65c per serve
  • We used semi dried Cherry Tomatoes for 60c per serve
  • About two ounces of Neufchatel went on each Pizza, or 25c per serve
  • Add 30c for Capers and Shallot.

We double docked the Dough this time and improved the crust even over our last attempt. An indulgent Pizza for $4.55 per serve.

Mar 18: Smoked Trout, Avocado & Sprouts; The Country Deli

Lunch

A simple sandwich each: Smoked Trout, Avocado, Sprouts & Garlic Spread.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • An Avocado is 49c or 25c per serve
  • We shared a $3.49 can of Smoked Trout, or $1.75 per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread
  • Add 30c for Sprouts.

A decent sandwich for $3.44 per serve.

Dinner

It was Country Deli night with the Marinated Skirt Steak Dinner hack as usual. While intended for one, this makes a generous meal for two. We split the meat evenly. Foodie Greg got the Vegetable side, while Foodie Philip got the Home Fries and three home-added Fried Eggs. With tax, tip and Eggs it was $16.65 per serve.

Mar 17: Lamb Gyro; Mussels in White Wine Sauce with Baguette Rounds & Coleslaw

Lunch

We were near New York Chicken and Gyro and picked up one of our favorite lunches: the Lamb Gyro for $8.17 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

Having had our Corned Beef Brisket and Cabbage on Saturday night for Foodie Greg’s birthday, tonight we had Mussels in White Wine Sauce, served with the remaining par-baked Baguette as rounds and a side of Coleslaw.

  • Mussels are $2.29 for the pack, or $1.15 per serve
  • We used 80c worth of ingredients in the Sauce, or 40c per serve
  • The remaining Baguette was 27c per serve
  • Coleslaw adds 50c per serve.

A very tasty meal for $2.32 per serve.

Mar 16: Baguette with Apple & Delice de Bourgogne; Lentil and Chorizo Soup

Lunch

We finished baking ⅔ of a par-baked Baguette, and filled it with Apple and Delice de Bourgogne.

  • The Baguette is $1.59 and we used ⅔ or 53c per serve
  • The Delice de Bourgogne was $5.38 and we shared ½, or $1.35 per serve
  • Apple adds 20c per serve.

A simple meal with excellent ingredients for $2.08 per serve.

Dinner

For our Meatless Monday we finished the Lentil and Chorizo soup for $3.95 per serve.

Mar 14: Ramen Noodles with Bok Choy & Ramen Broth; Smoked St Louis Ribs with Coleslaw and Mexican Cowboy Pinto Beans

Lunch

We took our Shin Noodles, but substituted a Ramen Broth for the very spicy flavor pouch.

  • The Ramen is $1.32 per serve with the Bok Choy
  • Oyster Mushrooms add 50c per serve
  • The Ramen Broth was $1.79 or 90c per serve

A warming meal on a cool day for $2.72 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we smoked, then cooked, some St Louis Ribs and served with Coleslaw and Mexican Cowboy Pinto Beans.

  • The Ribs were $15.80 or $7.90 per serve
  • The Mexican Cowboy Pinto Beans were $1.60 after specials, or 80c per serve
  • The Coleslaw Mix was $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve
  • Add 30c per serve for dressing ingredients.

These Pinto Beans were the premium brand, but lacked any distinguishing flavor. The less expensive brand has more flavor. Tonight we prepared a tangy dressing for the Coleslaw that we both preferred. A good meal for $9.50 per serve.

Mar 13: Nashville Style Hot Chicken Sandwich; Corned Beef Brisket with Boiled Cabbage and Carrots

Lunch

Although we visit Skewers Halaal regularly, this is the first time we’ve tried the Nashville Style Hot Chicken Sandwich. The Foodies shared a serve of Fries, for $8.75 per serve. It was very good.

Dinner

Foodie Greg’s birthday dinner is usually Corned Beef Top Round, but this year only Brisket was available. Served with Boiled Cabbage and Carrots it’s a one pot meal (other than the Onion Sauce).

  • The Brisket was on special for $8.75 per serve
  • The Cabbage was 78c per serve
  • Carrots add 82c per serve
  • Heavy Cream is $1.99 and we used a tiny bit, or 10c per serve
  • Add 50c for Flour, Onion and Horseradish.

The Brisket shrunk to about half size during cooking, so we served it all. The Brisket was not as good as the Top Round (Silverside) we normally have, but it was still good. A good meal for $10.95 per serve.

Mar 12: Salami, Kumato & Smokey Cheddar; Miso Fish Soup with Soba

Lunch

The last in the Charcuterie (again) so we used the Salami with Kumato & Smokey Cheddar in a toasted sandwich each.

  • The Salami was 85c per serve
  • The Kumato were $3.69 for six, and we had one each, or 62c per serve
  • The Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

A tasty sandwich for $2.95 per serve.

Our Fishy Friday dish tonight is Miso Fish Soup with Soba.

  • The cod fillets were six for $12.99 or $1.63 per serve
  • The Oyster Mushrooms were $4.99 or $1.25 per serve as we used hal
  • Sugar Snap Peas are add 44c per serve
  • Broth was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Soba Noodles are $3.29 and we used about ⅓ or 55c per serve
  • Add 30c per serve for other ingredients.

While it looked pretty and tasted okay, the dish lacked any robust flavor. Not bad, but not exciting for $5.17 per serve.

Mar 11: Cheese Bagel with Avocado, Sprouts & Smoked Trout; NY Strip Steak, Crash Hot Potatoes and Asparagus

We had some Cheese Bagels from Aldi, so we added Avocado, Sprouts & Smoked Trout to make a tasty sandwich.

  • Cheese Bagels were $2.89 or 58c per serve
  • An Avocado is 49c or 25c per serve
  • We shared a $3.49 can of Smoked Trout, or $1.75 per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread
  • Add 30c for Sprouts.

It came together well for $3.28 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight’s ‘Steak Night’ is a NY Strip Steak served with Crash Hot Potatoes and Asparagus. We made a tasty sauce from our Organic (no added sugar) Ketchup and Heavy Cream with a healthy dash of Worcestershire Sauce.

  • The NY Strip was $16.07 for two steaks, or $4.02 per serve
  • The Asparagus was $3.23 and we used half, or 81c per serve
  • Fingerling Potatoes were 68c per serve
  • Add 40c for Sauce ingredients.

A very good meal for $5.51 per serve. The Sauce may have an unusual color, but it was very tasty.
