  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c
  • The Smoked Salmon was $1.38 per serve
  • Add 20c for Neufchatel

  • Add 30c for Tomatoes.

Who can ever complain about a Smoked Salmon Bagel! Delicious for $2.66 per serve.

Dinner

As we were running of our Powerwalls during a PSPS blackout, we decided to bring in dinner from Skewers Halaal, where we both had the Chapli Kebab Dinner for $14.22 per serve, with tax and tip.

Jan 18: Branston Pickle & Chedder, Hummus & Sprouts; Shepherds Pie

Lunch

A simple lunch of two shared sandwiches: Branston Pickle & Chedder, Hummus & Sprouts.

  • The Aldi Bread is 53c per serve
  • Branston Pickle adds about 40c per serve
  • The Cheddar was from Aldi was $3.59 and we shared about 1/3, or 60c per serve
  • Add 30c for Sprouts
  • Add 30c for Hummus.

A satisfactory lunch for $2.13 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we turned to Shepherd’s Pie, swapping our Meatless Monday soup to tomorrow where we anticipate being without Grid power and want to avoid using an oven. Plus, we still had that Mashed Potato to use.

We’ve mostly done Cottage Pie – the beef version of a Shepherd’s Pie – but a true Lamb Shepherd’s Pie is a warm, filling dish. We get four serves.

  • The Ground Lamb is $5.99 or $1.50 per serve
  • The Bob Evans Mashed Potato was $2.95 and we used the remaining ⅔, or 25c per serve
  • Add 35c for carrot, onion and celery
  • Beef stock is $1.99 but we used ¼ or 13c per serve
  • Add 20c per serve for butter
  • Add 30c per serve for flour and seasonings.

Foodie Philip may have had more than one serve, because this Shepherd’s Pie turned out to be very tasty. Unfortunately it was not a pretty plate, so no photo was taken. An ugly, but very tasty meal for $2.73 per serve.

Jan 17: Soutzoukakia with Hummus in a Panini Roll; Chipotle Turkey Bacon Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes, Sautéed Green Beans and Mushrooms, Mashed Potato and Turkey Gravy

Lunch

Today’s lunch was almost a repeat of yesterdays, but with Hummus instead of Tabouli.

  • Soutzoukakia is $3.99 per serve, and we shared a half serve, or $1.00 each
  • A Panini Roll is 63c
  • The hummus is 25c per serve.

Again a very tasty lunch for $1.88 per serve.

Dinner

The last time we had this meatloaf, the Foodies wrote:

The worst thing about ground turkey is that it is lacking in fat. This is considered a virtue by those who got the (completely wrong) message that there is something wrong with fats. But, add enough bacon to bring the combined result to 85% lean, 15% fat, and you have a winner.

We created this recipe, with the addition of half a can of chipotle and it’s pretty good. Tonight’s result was particularly light in texture and made four serves.

  • Ground turkey cost $3.59 or 90c per serve
  • Bacon adds 60c per serve
  • A can of chipotle is $1.50 and we used half, or 38c per serve
  • Add 65c for onion, breadcrumbs and seasonings
  • The gravy was $1.69 or 80c per serve (we used it all)
  • The Bob Evans Mashed Potato was $2.95 and we used ⅓, or 49c per serve
  • Mushrooms and Beans add 85c per serve.

A really satisfying Meatloaf and, generally, comfort food for $4.67 per serve.

For those wondering about the image: it was an experiment with lighting and an iPhone as my regular camera had no battery charge.

Jan 16: Soutzoukakia with Tabouli in a Panini Roll; Rack of Lamb with Grapefruit and Pomegranate Salad

Lunch

We split the remaining Soutzoukakia and served in a hot Panini roll with Tabouli.

  • Soutzoukakia is $3.99 per serve, and we shared a half serve, or $1.00 each
  • A Panini Roll is 63c
  • The Tabouli is $2.99 and we served half, or 36c per serve.

A very, very satisfactory lunch for $1.99 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight’s sous vide (and seared) Rack of Lamb was served with a Grapefruit and Pomegranate Salad and Dolmas.

  • For $22.13 we got 2.25 lbs of Rack of Lamb that we split into four 9oz (approx) serves for $5.53 per serve
  • We shared half a 99c Pomegranate for 25c per serve
  • We shared a $1.29 Grapefruit for 65c per serve
  • Mint came from our garden.
  • Stuffed Eggplant Dolmas were $1.79 or 60c per serve.

We tweaked our sous vide temperature up a degree, and that made the texture much more pleasant. As always an excellent meal, for $7.03 per serve.

Jan 15: Southwest Chopped Salad; Smoked Salmon Pizza

Lunch

The Southwest Chopped Salad kit from Aldi was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve.

  • The Pizza Dough was $1.29, or 65c per serve
  • We used semi dried Cherry Tomatoes for 60c per serve
  • About two ounces of Neufchatel went on each Pizza, or 25c per serve

Now that we’ve perfected the crust this is a most enjoyable Pizza for $3.63 per serve.

Jan 14: 13 Bean Soup on Sourdough topped with a Fried Egg; The Country Deli Skirt Steak

Lunch

We took the last of the sourdough and topped with the last of the 13 Bean Soup, now much thicker, and topped with a Fried Egg for 48c per serve (for the Egg).

Dinner

Tonight The Country Deli’supplied our “prepared out of the house” meal and we once again ‘hacked’ their Romanian Skirt Steak Dinner Meal. While intended for one, this makes a generous meal for two. We split the meat evenly. Foodie Greg got the Vegetable side, while Foodie Philip got the Home Fries and three home-added Fried Eggs. With tax, tip and Eggs it was $16.65 per serve.

Jan 13: Snacks; Soutzoukakia with Dolma, Hummus and Tabouli

Lunch

The Foodies were running an important errand around lunch time, so didn’t eat until snacking mid afternoon for about $1.00 each.

Dinner

A return to the Soutzoukakia with Dolma, Hummus and Tabouli. We get three serves from this recipe.

  • Australian Ground lamb was $5.99 at Aldi or $2.00 per serve
  • An egg is 51c or 17c per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 25c per serve

  • Stuffed Eggplant Dolmas were $1.79 or 60c per serve

An excellent meal, as always, for $4.90 per serve.

Jan 12: Ploughman’s Lunch; Eggplant and Prosciutto Ragú

Lunch

Since Foodie Philip scored another half boulle of homemade Sourdough Bread, we lightly toasted it, topped with Branston Pickle & Cheddars and served with Pickled Onion and Apple, a combination known as a Ploughman’s Lunch.

  • The Sourdough Bread was free
  • Branston Pickle adds about 40c per serve
  • The Cheddar was from Aldi was $3.59 and we shared about half, or 90c per serve
  • Apple adds 40c per serve
  • Pickled onion adds 10c per serve.

An excellent lunch for $1.80 per serve.

Dinner

The Eggplant and Prosciutto Ragú was a new recipe for us, but it turned out really well and made four serves. We served it on top of Cauliflower Gnocchi.

  • The Prosciutto was $4.99 or $1.25 per serve
  • The Eggplant was $1.39 or 35c per serve
