Dec 10: Brioche Bagel and topped with Apple Sauerkraut Salad; Stir-fry Black Pepper Beef

  • The Artisanal Kraut was $3.29 or 42c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 66c per serve
  • Add 40c for Mayonnaise & Cocktail Sauce for the dressing.

  • Bell Peppers were 48c per serve
  • Chipotle powder adds 10c per serve

  • The Artisanal Kraut was $3.29 or 42c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 66c per serve
  • Add 40c for Mayonnaise & Cocktail Sauce for the dressing.

A pretty good ‘sandwich’ for $2.40 per serve.

Dinner

Our delayed birthday celebration went well, with the Single Bone Prime Rib (a.k.a. Tomahawk Steak) being sous vide to perfection followed by a quick, hot sear before being sliced and served.

The Rib was sous vide then seared in its own fat for about 60 sec a side.
  • The Prime Rib was $24.34 but we’ll get three serves from that, or $8.11 per serve, which is double what you’d get in a steak house
  • Mushrooms were $2.69 or $1.35 each
  • Butter adds 50c per serve
  • The Tabouli is $2.99 and we served half, or 72c per serve
  • The Béarnaise sauce was $3.29 and we used about ⅓, or 55c per serve.

The Prime Rib was perfect and it all came together to make an excellent birthday celebration for $11.23 per serve.

Dec 8: Sushi Bento Box; Beer Bratwurst with Apple Sauerkraut Salad

Lunch

It was Foodie Philip’s birthday so we did a celebratory lunch from Maru Sushi Bar: the Sushi Bento Box with Spicy Tuna Roll, variety Sushi, Salad, Rice and Miso Soup for $15.64 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

It was to be a single bone Prime Rib night, but uncertainty about when power would be restored left us opting for a more power-conservative meal of Beer Bratwurst and Apple Sauerkraut Salad. The Prime Rib will be tomorrow.

  • Beer Bratwurst were $4.49 or $2.25 per serve
  • The Apple was $1.23 or 28c per serve
  • The Artisanal Kraut was $3.29 or 42c per serve
  • Add 30c for Dressing ingredients
  • Add 10c for Dutch Mustard.

A flavorsome meal for $3.35 per serve.

Dec 7: Ham & Coleslaw; Caribbean Black Bean

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Coleslaw is 56c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 66c per serve.

A pretty decent sandwich for $1.96 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we had a simple meal of reheated Caribbean Flavored Bone Broth Black Bean Soup from Aldi for $2.79 per serve, which was pretty good.

Dec 6: Soutzoukakia & Garlic Spread in a Panini Roll; Bacon Wrapped Scallops with Japanese Fried Rice

Lunch

We took the remaining Soutzoukakia and heated it with Panini Rolls. We spread one half of the roll with Garlic Spread, and the other got the Sauce drizzled on. A layer of semi-dried Cherry Tomatoes finished the roll.

  • The Panini Roll is 63c per serve
  • The Soutzoukakia was $5.32 per meal serve, or $2.66 per sandwich
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread
  • Semi-dried tomatoes add 20c per serve.

A very tasty, and messy, roll for $3.89 per serve.

Dinner

Foodie Greg found some frozen Bacon Wrapped Scallops, which interested us as a throwback to Scamander (Tasmania, Australia) in December 2018. We served them on Japanese Fried Rice.

  • Japanese Style Fried rice comes from Trader Joe’s and is $3.29 or $1.65 per very generous serve
  • The Bacon Wrapped Scallop is $6.99 or $3.50 per serve
  • Add 30c for extra Edamame.

While the Bacon Wrapped Scallops were good, they weren’t as good value as their regular Giant Scallops. Still a very tasty and enjoyable meal for $5.45 per serve.

Dec 5: Heuvos Rancheros; Duck L’Orange with French Lentils and Blackberry Salad

Lunch

For lunch we purchased Heuvos Rancheros from La Fiesta for $10.54 with tax and tip.

Dinner

We decided we would like a change from our Asian inspired Duck and Yakisoba Noodles, and Foodie Greg found a Duck L’orange sous vide recipe and served with French Lentils and a Blackberry Salad.

  • The Duck was $18.23 or $9.12 per serve
  • French Lentils are $2.99 for a 500g (about 1lb) and we used half or 75c per serve

  • Fire Roasted Peppers cost $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve.

It was just as good as two days ago. The flavors blended to create something completely new and unexpected, in a good way, for $3.77 per serve.

Dinner

Our Fishy Friday dinner tonight was an Aldi Caesar Salad Kit and Grilled Flounder. It was our first time with the Flounder. As thin as it is, it cooked in our Griddle/Panini press in one minute.

  • The Caesar Salad Kit is $1.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • The Flounder was $5.19 and we had about half, or $1.30 per serve.

The Flounder was pretty bland and without a lot of texture. It’s not bad, just boring, for $2.30 per serve.

Dec 3: Fried Scallops, Coleslaw & Fries; Chapli Kebab Meal

Lunch

A nearby shopping trip once again put us near Mr Fish & Chips. We stuck with the Fried Scallops, Fries and Coleslaw and ordered extra Coleslaw.

This is a meal for one that we shared -adding extra Coleslaw – making it $5.19 with tax and tip.

Dinner

Tonight was our week for take-out and it was time to revisit Skewers Halaal. Last time we both agreed that, even though the Lamb Kebab was very good, the Chapli was better, so that’s what we enjoyed for $14.22 per serve, with tax and tip.

Dec 2: Toasted Smokey Cheddar, Peppers & Chorizo Sandwich; Chile Verde Redux

Lunch

Foodie Greg found some Chorizo Salami on special so we added half to our sandwiches, and topped with Smokey Cheddar and Roasted Bell Pepper in a melt.

The flavors blended to create something completely new and unexpected, in a good way, for $3.77 per serve, but felt a lot more expensive!

Dinner

For dinner we returned to the Chile Verde for $4.15 per serve.

Dec 1: Smoked Trout, Avocado & Sprouts; Soutzoukakia with Dolmas, Hummus and a Feta Spinach Salad

  • We shared a $3.49 can of Smoked Trout, or $1.75 per serve
  • The Avocado was 51c or 26c per serve
  • Add 30c for Alfalfa Sprouts
  • Garlic Spread adds 50c per serve.

A quite decent sandwich for $3.55 per serve.

Dinner

Having acquired Ground Lamb for a good price at Aldi, we decided on Soutzoukakia again.

  • Australian Ground lamb was $5.99 at Aldi or $2.00 per serve
  • An egg is 51c or 17c per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 25c per serve
  • Cotija cheese, substituting for Parmesan is $3.99 for 8oz and we shared 2 oz or 50c per serve
  • 1/4 cup and a tablespoon of red wine – halved – is 34c per serve
  • Stuffed Eggplant Dolmas were $2.79 or 93c per serve
  • Fried Eggplant (canned) was $2.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Parsley was $1.49 for the bunch, but we only used 1/4 or 13c per serve
  • Fresh mint came from our garden
  • The Garden Salad adds 80c per serve, because of the Feta.

We’ve enjoyed this every time we’ve had it, and tonight was no exception. A very good dish for $6.12 per serve.
