Nov 17: Apple & Cheddar; White Chili with Ground Pork

Lunch

A return to a favorite: Apple & Smokey Cheddar Sandwiches, because today we were parked in! Our plans to buy take-out are being seriously derailed.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Apple was 79c or 20c per serve
  • Smokey Cheddar was $2.69 for 10 slices, or 54c per serve
  • Add 30c for Mustard.

As always a nice balance between the Smokey Cheddar and the sharpness of the Apple, balanced with the Mustard. A favorite sandwich for $1.78 per serve.

Dinner

For simplicity we finished the White Chili with Ground Pork from last week for $4.07 per serve.

Nov 16: BLTA on Brioche Bagel; Quesadilla Heuvos Rancheros

Lunch

Our plan to up our take-out consumption during this “at home” conference week. We would be in Cupertino for this conference, eating out at lunch and dinner, so while the conference is virtual, we decided the eating should be as close as possible. Except most of our planned restaurants are closed on a Monday! So we improvised with a Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato & Avocado on a Brioche Bagel.

  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used four of 10 slices, or $1.00 per serve
  • Half a 49c Avocado is 25c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we used one, or 70c per serve
  • Add 30c for Butter Lettuce.

A great substitute for take out, although we felt the Avocado did not add anything to the sandwich, but otherwise great for $2.83 per serve.

Dinner

For tonight’s Meatless Monday we did a vegetarian Quesadilla Heuvos Rancheros.

  • The Tortillas were six for $1.99 and we shared two, or 33c per serve
  • Half a can of refried beans, shared across two halves is 26c per serve
  • We used two slices of Swiss per serve, or 68c per serve
  • Two Pastured Eggs add 84c per serve
  • Add 50c for Salsa.

The Roasted Tomato Salsa really lifts this to something quite tasty for $2.61 per serve.

Nov 15: Chinese Fried Rice; Rack of Lamb with Eggplant, Mint & Pomegranate Salad

Lunch

Foodie Greg took the remaining BBQ Pork, Broccoli and most of the Rice and created a very flavorsome Fried Rice for $5.20 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we took one of our half Rack of Lamb and sous vide it before searing off the fat side.

  • The Rack of Lamb was $22.13, but we cooked only half, or $5.53 per serve
  • Mint was from our garden
  • Eggplant was $1.39 or 70c per serve
  • The French (Valbreso) Feta was $10.99 but we used 1/6 or 92c per serve
  • Pomegranates came from a neighbor’s tree
  • Add 30c for dressing ingredients.

The Australian Lamb was perfectly cooked and the Eggplant, Feta and Pomegranate Salad is the perfect balance, for $7.45 per serve.

Nov 14: BBQ Pork, Roast Pork and Broccoli; Ham and Coleslaw Sandwich

Lunch

We were reasonably close to Sam Woo’s Chinese BBQ so we picked up a serve of Roast Pork, BBQ and Stir-fried Chinese Broccoli. We ate about ¾ of the $41.60 meal, or $15.60 per serve.

Dinner

After such a big lunch the Foodies opted for a simple Ham and Coleslaw Sandwich for dinner.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Coleslaw is 56c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 66c per serve.

Not too shabby for $1.96 per serve.

Nov 13: Roasted Potato, Peppers & Onion Frittata; Japanese Take-out

Lunch

For lunch we shared a Roasted Potato, Peppers & Onion Frittata.

  • A Pastured Egg is 42c each and we used six for three people, or 84c per serve.
  • The Roasted Potatoes with Peppers and Onions is $2.99 for the pack, or $1.00 per serve.

A decent lunch for $1.84 per serve.

Dinner

For our “every second week take-out” we picked up a Bento Box Style meal from Maru Sushi Bar. We had lunch from there and decided to promote them to dinner! We each had Miso Soup, a full (and I mean stuffed full too) Spicy Tuna Roll, Nine pieces of Sashimi and lots of Pickled Ginger for $21.62 per serve.

Nov 12: Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw; Sous Vide Pork Loin Chop with Coffee Garlic Rub, Tex Mex Pinto Beans and a Green Salad

Lunch

A nearby shopping trip put us near Mr Fish & Chips. We stuck with the Fried Scallops, Fries and Coleslaw and ordered extra Coleslaw.

This is a meal for one that we shared, making it $5.19 with tax and tip.

Dinner

With the Pork Loin Chops we’ve decided that sous vide them with a Coffee Garlic Rub gives us a great result every time. The Tex Mex Beans are in a pouch, so they reheat right in the immersion circulator with the meat.

  • The pork chops are $10.30 or $5.15 per serve
  • Add 40c for Coffee Rub
  • The Pinto Beans were $2.25 or $1.13 per serve
  • Butter Lettuce is 40c per serve
  • Picked Onions add 35c per serve
  • Bell Peppers add 32c per serve
  • Add 30c for dressing ingredients.

A very good meal for $8.05 per serve.

Nov 11: Ham, Sauerkraut & Swiss on Brioche Bagel; White Chili with Ground Pork

Lunch

A return to a favorite: our faux Reuben.

  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c per serve
  • Swiss is 34c per serve
  • The Artisanal Kraut was $3.29 or 42c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 66c per serve
  • Add 40c for Mayonnaise & Cocktail Sauce for the dressing.

A tasty lunch for $2.40 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we returned to Foodie Greg’s adaption of a chicken chili to ground pork (the other white meat) and it was pretty good. The recipe makes four good serves.

  • The ground pork was $8.35 or $2.09 per serve
  • Chicken broth is $1.99 or 50c per serve
  • White beans are 99c a can or 50c per serve
  • The jalapeño chili was 26c and we used one of two, or 4c per serve
  • Anaheim Peppers were 98c but we used half, or 13c per serve
  • Add 10c per serve for onion and garlic
  • Frozen corn was $1.29 and we used half, or 16c per serve
  • Add 55c for seasoning, Salsa, labné and crushed tostadas.

Despite expecting the recipe to thicken with the blended beans, this was a very loose chili, with a texture more like soup! It has a fairly mild flavor, probably because we could only get one jalapeño and no poblano peppers. Quite enjoyable for $4.07 per serve.

Nov 10: Steak & Stout Pie; Halloumi, Guacamole, Bell Peppers & Butter Lettuce Tacos

Lunch

On a cold day a warm meat pie fits the bill perfectly, so we heated two Trader Joe’s Steak and Stout Pies for $3.25 per serve.

Dinner

Our postponed Meatless Monday became Taco Tuesday, with our Halloumi, Guacamole, Bell Peppers & Butter Lettuce Tacos.

  • The Halloumi was $5.99 or $3.00 per serve
  • The Tortillas were $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve
  • Guacamole is $1.10 per serve
  • Bell Peppers are 32c per serve
  • Tostados were $1.39 for 21, or 10c per serve
  • Greek Yoghurt substituted for Sour Cream for 10c per serve
  • Add 10c for Roasted Pepper Salsa.

We prepared the Halloumi in our multipurpose “Panini Press,” which turned out to be the best Halloumi we’ve ever prepared. Instead of going tough, as it normally does, the Halloumi became soft, with a texture bordering on fish. In fact Terre a Terre in Brighton does a Fish and Chips with Halloumi as the ‘fish.’

As a result these Tacos turned out really well for $5.22 per serve.

Nov 9: BLT on Sourdough; Beef Massaman Curry with Baby Potatoes

Lunch

Foodie Philip scored another Sourdough half boule from an neighbor and we made the classic BLT with it.

  • The bread came free
  • Butter Lettuce add 30c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we used two, or 70c per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used four of 10 slices, or 50c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

Today’s version was particularly good for $1.90 per serve.

Dinner

Because today was cooler than tomorrow, we swapped our meals, so Meatless Monday will become Halloumi Taco Tuesday.

  • The beef was $8.84, or $4.42 per serve
  • The curry is $3.38 per can or $1.69 per serve
  • Coconut milk is $1.69 per can or 85c per serve
  • Peanuts were $2.99 but we only used half, or 75c per serve
  • Carrots add 37c per serve
  • Peal onion adds 20c per serve
  • The Medley of Baby Potatoes was $2.69 and we used ⅓, or 45c per serve.

Warming and tasty, as always, for $8.73

Nov 8: Bahn Mi; Greek Drunken Pork Stew with Brown Rice and Peas

Lunch

The Bahn Mi from Pho Saigon 1, for $10.00 with tax and tip, seems to be getting bigger with every visit. Foodie Greg could not finish his today!

Dinner

A recipe we’d like before – Greek Drunken Pork Stew was perfect on a cool day.

  • The pork was $8.99 or $4.50 per serve
  • Red wine adds 50c or 25c per serve
  • Canned Tomatoes are 99c, or 45 per serve
  • Add 40c for the other ingredients
  • Brown rice adds 33c per serve
  • Frozen peas are $1.29 per pack and we used half, or 33c per serve.

Tasty and filling for $6.26 per serve.
